Title Circassian Woman
Collection Photograph
Description Unknown Circassian woman.

The "Circassian Beauty" was often a part of the freak show or sideshow of a circus and stood as an example of a primitive culture from a distant land. The Circassian people were said to have originated in the Caucasus and were a humble mountain farming people living under the tyranny of Imperial Russia. Part of the exotic nature of the Circassian story was that the women were often associated with white slavery.
